After his death, the sketchbook were torn apart by autograph collectors and souvenir hunters so that hardly any book remained complete.
The sketch collection of the Beethoven-Haus includes books and loose sheets. Many sheets and pages belong to sketchbooks kept in other libraries. The collection thus represents almost the entire sketch corpus.
Among recent works on Beethoven is "Conversations with Beethoven" by the American novelist and playwright Sanford Friedman ( -- ). This work remained unpublished at the time of Friedman's death and was published at last in as part of the New York Review of Books ongoing "Classics" series which preserves undeservedly neglected /5(15).
For serious scholars of his work, there was long felt a need for a comprehensive description of his sketchbooks; fearing that some had been lost during WWII (recovered in in Poland) and realizing many of them were in disarray, a project was begun in which resulted in this Edition: First Edition.
